Diamond Peak–Winter

Tahoe’s lesser known jewel, Diamond Peak is perfectly set.  The cute, 655 acre resort is almost at lakeside sharing opposite sides of Lake Tahoe’s perimeter highway.  In addition to the perfect setting this jewel is perfectly cut.  The full service resort sports the 4th longest vertical drop in Tahoe at 1840’.

One particular ski run is 2.5 miles long.  They are able to cover 75% of their developed terrain with man-made snow.  Try some of the 14 advanced runs or spend time in the Solitude Canyon expert area.  They even have two Terrain Parks, just like the big boys.  Do not let Diamond Peak’s size fool you, this is a ski area with heart.

This is also a ski area with soul.  On any Sunday take the Lakeview Quad Chair up to the Snowflake Lodge for a shore to shore view of Lake Tahoe and a non-denominational church service.  The view is inspirational.

After a few minutes with your spiritual side it’s time to get physical.  Turn around and take the O. God Black Diamond run straight down.  If that is a little too much for a Sunday morning the Ridge Run will give you some gentle Blue Square choices downhill.  There are no Green Circle runs off the top but there are two very nice beginner runs at the bottom.

On the mountain dining is fairly traditional.  Burgers and salads are available at the Snowflake or Base Lodges.  But, the local après ski dining in nearby Incline Village is exceptional.  Big Water Grill and Lone Eagle Grill provide local fine dining in a casual atmosphere.  For a real Tahoe area treat stick around Diamond Peak a little late on Saturdays.  The Snowflake Lodge hosts a wine tasting event every Saturday beginning in February.  Put your feet up, watch the sun fade over blue Lake Tahoe, sip some fine wine and snack on warming appetizers at the, “Last Tracks” event.  While you snack the snow groomers smooth out some corduroy on the blue runs for your slide home.  Bon appetite!

Diamond Peak has negotiated a variety of lodging packages in nearby N. Shore.  Ten local lodges provide hundreds of units.  Take your pick from the budget priced $39/night room only Tahoe Biltmore to the luxurious $1500 per night private residences including discount lift tickets booked through Goldfish Properties.  For something in the middle the Hyatt Regency is a real gem with moderate room prices, fine dining and on-site amenities including spas, swimming pools and fire pits.  They even provide a direct to the lifts shuttle for guests.

Add Diamond Peak to your list of must do ski areas.  This Diamond is perfectly cut and perfectly set.
