Mt. Baker, Washington- Winter

When visiting Washington in the winter time it may be easy to get caught up in the many winter activities the area has to offer.  But one stop that you need to make would be at the Mt. Baker Ski Area.  Known for some amazing views, Mt. Baker’s mountains will keep you awestruck and busy throughout the day.

While Mt. Baker features only 31 trails, the trails are geared towards a more experienced snowboarder or skier. The trail breakdown is: 24% for beginners, 45% for intermediate, and 31% for experts.

The Mt. Baker Ski Area receives roughly 647 inches of snow a season.

Other winter activities that visitors can participate in include cross country skiing and snowshoeing. Rentals for cross country skis and snowshoes are available at both mountain lodges, White Salmon and Heather Meadows.  Sledding and snowtubing are prohibited within Mt. Baker Ski Area, but guests are welcome to visit the National Forest Service Land to participate in these activities.  Snowmobiling is also popular just outside of the Mt. Baker Ski Area at Canyon Creek, Glacier Creek, the Mt. Baker National Recreation Area and the Anderson Creek Area.

Another big event that occurs at Mt. Baker yearly is the annual Mt. Baker Film Festival.  The film festival showcases independent filmmakers, especially those who make ski and snowboarding films. Other sports’ films are also highlighted like motocross, surfing, BMX and skating films.

When looking for a place to spend the night, the possibilities are endless in and around the Mt. Baker area. Repeat guests suggest the Mystic Inn at Silver Lake, the Inn at Mt. Baker, Canyon Creek Chalets and the Logs at Canyon Creek.

So, if you find yourself in the Washington area in the winter time with a free day or two to spare, check out the Mt. Baker Ski Area for their skiing and stop back during their popular film festival.
